Michael Phillips
Composer
Michael Phillips (b. 1993) is an award-winning composer, arranger, singer and flautist from East Yorkshire, currently based in the East Midlands, UK. His music has been commissioned and performed by artists and institutions including Andrew Penny MBE and the Hull Philharmonic Orchestra, the Fidelio Trio, Quatuor Danel, Manchester Chamber Choir and the Confucius Institute. His music for violin and piano has also been commercially recorded by violinist Sian Philipps and pianist Sophia Rahman.

In January 2025, Michael was named as the winner of the 2024 Calefax Composers Competition, and his work, Chorale and Groove, will receive its premiere performance by the Calefax Reed Quintet during their 2025 season. Michael was also awarded the 2023 Clements Prize for Composers at Conway Hall, London, with his piano trio I think about you often, which received its premiere and subsequent performance from the Fidelio Trio.

Michael is a graduate of the University of Manchester, gaining a Master's in Composition under the tutelage of Dr Richard Whalley and Professor Camden Reeves. He studied flute and piccolo performance with Linda Verrier (Royal Northern College of Music) and Helen Wilson (Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra), and received the PJ Leonard Prize for Composition upon graduation from his studies. During his time at Manchester, Michael was fortunate to work with many notable musicians, including renowned composer Howard Skempton, and performers Trio Atem, Quatuor Danel, the Ebonit Saxophone Quartet and the Vonnegut Collective.

Michael was a flautist and piccolo player in the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain, and as a singer has performed in concert alongside the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and the Philharmonia Orchestra at notable venues across the United Kingdom, including the Royal Albert Hall, Royal Festival Hall and St John's Smith Square. He has also sung with the Songmen and Chamber Choir of Leicester Cathedral, and leading chamber choir Leicestershire Chorale.

Michael works primarily within music education, and has composed and arranged various works for use in educational settings. His song arrangements and original compositions have been used as part of major education projects in the UK, aimed at providing children with a complete music education throughout their school life. Until 2018, Michael was also an ensemble conductor on staff at the University of Keele.
